Hi, my name is Jessica.
I found my passion for learning about and researching international and travel finance out of necessity!
A native Australian, I picked up my life and moved to the UK at 22 to study for a Master in Ancient History at the University of Oxford. I then stayed on a worked for several years at the Oxford University Museums.
Unsure about my future plans, I split my finances between Australia and the UK. Some pension issues, but nothing too challenging.
But at the start of 2018, I decided that I wanted to see more of the world and set out on a digital nomad journey. While I had no definite plans or timeframe, I intended to end up back in Australia, eventually.
Enter a period of visa applications, finding affordable flights and accommodation, and building up an income stream as a freelance writer. I set off eastwards across the world from Europe to South America.
It was always my intention to spend at least six months in Brazil, as I am a passionate Capoeirista (martial art and game that includes elements of dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality). But those plans became more permanent when I fell in love, got married, and officially settled down as a Brazilian resident in 2021. I guess I now consider myself an expat, without necessarily thinking that we will stay here forever.
This represented the start of a new challenge as I tried to regularize my tax status, rationalize my growing collection of pension plans, receive money from international clients to bank accounts in multiple countries, and figure out the best way to spend, save, and invest for the future.
So, without a background in finance or much experience with money matters, I set out to educate myself! As a writer and content creator, I’m keen to share what I’ve learned with others in a way that is accessible and doesn’t require a degree in economics.
For me, Transumo is a great place to do just that.
